For a while, in a pre-Gino Peruzzi world Sunderland chased with some intensity Lazio's Belgian fullback Luis Petro Cavanda.
A deal for a while looked to be very close after he effectively went on strike at the Rome side in a bid to leave the club, however that's all changed as he's signed a new contract with Lazio which will keep him at the side until 2018.
With the chase for Peruzzi nearing a close, although there's been a slight delay, it seems more and more likely that Cavanda was always a second choice for Paolo Di Canio this summer.
The highly-rated Belgian, whilst certainly a good player, will not be headed to Wearside this summer or any summer in the near future. Peruzzi does seem a perfectly fine consolation prize though, having been tipped for big things by arguably the best right-back in world football in the past ten years, Javier Zanetti.
As far as Cavanda is concerned though, cross him off all lists.
