Bolo Zenden
Right, I'll be honest, I really didn't expect Boudewijn Zenden to get this far. I have faith in the little Dutch maestro, of course I do, but the fact remains that he was only with us for two years, and for much of the time he was rudely neglected.
Yet, that me realise that perhaps Zenden's quality is thus unable to be overlooked. You, the people, have already voted in numbers for this poor dancing, long-locked, left-footed wonder of a man - so why not vote for him to go the whole way?
Zenden - as I have iterated time and again - boasts arguably the greatest CV of any player to wear the red and white shirt. PSV, Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool, Marseille (we'll ignore the "Boro Years"). And then he rocked up at Sunderland. All of that quality and he rocked up here, the epicentre of broken dreams, and was rather rudely shunned.
Granting him victory in this competition is the least we owe Mr Zenden. (CW)
John Mensah
The 'Rock of Gibralter' is still going strong in this competition, which is a testament to just how good a player he was for Sunderland. How many times did you hear the phrase 'if he had been fit, he wouldn't have been at Sunderland'?
His injury problems shouldn't be overlooked but neither should his ability. He could genuinely have been one of the best defenders around if he had managed to remain fit. He had everything you'd want in a central defender and as an illustration of how good he was, you have to look at how we've been unable to field anyone as consistently good in that position since.
His injury problems will always be what stick in minds the most but this is the longest he's gone in any competition without needing to be substituted in his career and with your help can continue this record breaking run. (AT)
