Roker Riches: Money From The Man City Clash

Sunderland go into this weekend's game looking for their fourth straight home victory over Man City. Our writers look over the week's action and judge how likely another 1-0 win is.

Stu Forster
Pundit Last Week's Profit/Loss Current Balance
Simon Walsh £-10.00 £154.00
Stephen Goldsmith N/A £89.80
Luke Bowley £-15.00 £40.56
David Boyle N/A £17.16
Karl Jones N/A £0
Craig Clark £12.45 £-0.80
Nick Holden £-10.00 £-11.00

A pretty poor week last time out for our tipsters, after we all went for a Sunderland win, blissfully unaware the team was about to implode. Craig was the only one that won any money this week, and it lifts him off the bottom of the table above Nick, who successfully predicted Man Utd would beat Fulham 3-1, but who also went for Wayne Rooney to get the first goal (Rooney set up United's first for Antonio Valencia to finish).

Special mention goes out to me too, who stuck a tenner on Reading to beat then bottom of the Championship Sheffield Wednesday. However this football club decided to fuck me on all fronts, letting Connor Wickham go on loan to Wednesday during mid-week, where he promptly inspired them to their first win of the season, thrashing the Berkshire side 5-2. Anyway, enough of the self-pity, let's have a look at this week's selections:

Simon Walsh

A break from the norm in which I actually lost. I'd kind of forgotten what that was like, so this is unusual. Still, I'm preparing my war-cry and fully prepared to turn it around this week with a couple of top selections.

Unfortunately those selections aren't very good for Sunderland. City may be in poor away form, but I don't think that will count for anything. I'm going with City to score either 2 or 3 total goals in the game at evens.

Elsewhere, how about a punt on these which return decent odds -- Genoa, Blackpool and Atletico Madrid all to win -- which is priced at 10/1 if you shop around.

  • Manchester City to score either 2 or 3 total goals - Evens - £5 Stake
  • Genoa, Blackpool and Atletico Madrid all to win - 10/1 - £5 Stake

Luke Bowley

One of us has to go for a 1-0 Sunderland win. It might as well be me. Just don't bet on it. Bet on Simon's one instead.

As for an actual bet that might actually win some money, Udinese are 11/8 to beat struggling Catania away, while in Spain Getafe are going well in La Liga, and they're at good odds to beat Elche at home. I'll go with Getafe.

  • Sunderland to win 1-0 - 25/1 - £1 stake
  • Getafe to beat Elche - 11/10 - £10 stake

Nick Holden

I can't resist lumping it on us to win 1-0 as well. There has to be some reason why we keep doing it, after all. I'm tempted to say Altidore will score after a decent performance against Southampton in the League Cup, but after being punished last week for being too specific with my Manchester United bet I'll leave it at just the 1-0.

Elsewhere, Sevilla haven't won an away game since football involved hundreds of players and multiple deaths per match so I'm going to go for them to lose away once more against an Espanyol side who fought well in the derby against Barcelona last weekend.

  • Sunderland to win 1-0 - 25/1 - £2 stake
  • Espanyol to beat Sevilla - 11/8 - £5 stake

David Boyle

With Manchester City coming to town that can only mean one thing right? Hmm, I'm not so sure. The fact that Sunderland are available at 8/1 to win the game speaks volumes! For this weekend's game, with it being televised, I am going to go with a market with which I've never really dabbled, man of the match and plump for City's talismanic David Silva to get the champagne on Sunday afternoon. (This bet is paid out based on the selection made by the Sky Sports pundit of choice)

Update: Following emerging reports of an injury sustained by David Silva which will likely see him sidelined for up to a month I am going change this selection to Samir Nasri who is available at 16/1)

Elsewhere, Arsenal's incredible away record is too good to ignore, even playing away at Old Trafford. I'm going to go with both teams to score and the Gunners to win.

  • Sunderland vs Manchester City; MOTM: Samir Nasri - 16/1 - £2.50 Stake
  • Manchester United vs Arsenal; Both teams to score and Arsenal to win - 19/4 - £2.50 Stake
