Sunderland have announced the squad numbers for next season with very few changes to the list, with all the numbers vacated by the losses of Michael Turner, Craig Gordon and Asamoah Gyan all left vacant.
With the club leaving it so late to announce the numbers, some speculated major changes were in the offing, such as Simon Mignolet or Keiren Westwood taking the vacant number one shirt, which hasn't come to pass.
Everyone remains on the same number as last year, with new arrival Carlos Cuellar taking his favoured number 24 shirt, vacated by Trevor Carson this summer, while Louis Saha has taken the number 25 shirt as Craig Gardner continues to fill the number 8 shirt he has often wore in his career and the 15 he wore at Tottenham Hotspur most recently still with David Vaughan.
Young goalkeeper Jordan Pickford takes the number 13 shirt, firmly establishing himself ahead of Ben Wilson as the number three 'keeper on the team. John Egan remains at number 42 and Ryan Noble moves to 33 as Martin O'Neill clearly doesn't like to share (we jest).
Youngsters who have been involved in the first team this summer such as Adam Reed, Craig Lynch and Louis Laing all go numberless, but their 37, 38 and 40 shirts remain open for later in the season.
