Reports: Loan Move For Wickham In The Offing?

Connor Wickham could be headed out on loan, but not to Ipswich Town it seems.

Frustration is growing at the lack of new faces on Wearside, but as we turn into August, momentum is building on the transfer front.

As is often the case with transfers, one move enables another, often kick-starting proceedings like the first tumbling domino.

With Sunderland's interest in Steven Fletcher solidifying this past weekend, crosshairs are focussing in on Connor Wickham - despite looking fit and ready to make an impact on Wearside.

The East Anglia Daily Times this morning carries quotes from Ipswich manager Paul Jewell, reaffirming that his side have first option on their Academy product should he go out on loan;

I do think we have first call on Connor [should he go out on loan]. But we would have to pay three-quarters of his wages and we don't have that type of money.

Which leaves Wickham as a spare part; one that has been rumoured to be a potential make-weight in any possible deal for Wolves striker Steven Fletcher..

The chain-of-event moves theory was backed up by Martin O'Neill over the weekend. He told the Northern Echo:

One thing could follow the other; I am certainly not averse to some, especially younger players, getting the opportunity to go out and play.

Just where that leaves the 19-year old remains to be seen, but prior to his move to the Stadium of Light he finished the Championship season strongly with the Tractor Boys, so a striker of his calibre would potentially be too good to turn down, especially for Wolves who are looking to bounce back up at the first attempt.

There's a strong thought however that Wickham's future should be on Wearside this season, with many fans thinking that he could benefit from playing limited first team action rather than against a lower standard of opposition. If the youngster is used to help bring Fletcher to the club, it might well be worth the sacrifice.
