However, here's what happened on this very day in history. In 1894, goals from Wilson, Gibson, Gillespie, and an own goal from Shaw saw Sunderland beat Darwen 4-0 in a Division One match at the Newcastle Road ground. 5 years later, Darwen disappeared from the football league. The club was wound up in 2009 and reformed as phoenix club AFC Darwen. They currently play in Divison One of the North West Counties League.
