After a string of fine performances since coming into the team, Simon Mignolet has really caught the eye, so it's little surprise that mischief-makers in the press have wanted to link him with moves away from the club. Manchester United and Arsenal have both been mentioned of late.
However in an effort to quash these rumours before they become anything of concern, Martin O'Neill has acted quickly to dispel any truth in them as he spoke to the Northern Echo;
I certainly wouldn't want to lose Mignolet or any of the other players who have been so important to us so far this season.
He's (Mignolet) been outstanding for us so far, so he's definitely not someone we would want to see leave. I haven't heard of that (the Arsenal link), but I'm not in any position to let our good players go in January.
Mignolet has a huge future ahead of him and it's likely that it will be on Wearside for the foreseeable. It's also a bit of a lazy one for reporters to make. Don't we all recall the same two clubs supposedly being interested in Craig Gordon? The man still currently without a club having been released from his contract here on Wearside?
There was never any chance of Mignolet leaving, and it's good to see such nonsense turned down by the gaffer.
