In news that will be derided and laughed at by many in the media, and rejoiced at on Wearside by people who actually watch him play rather than his low-light reel, Lee Cattermole has signed a a deal to extend his contract at the Stadium Of Light by a further four years.

Cattermole's delight was evident as he told the club's official website upon signing the deal;

I'm absolutely delighted. It feels like it's taken a bit of time, but the gaffer made it clear to me at the end of the season that he wanted to keep me at the club so it took a bit of time but it's been sorted in the end. If you look at our signings in the summer. I think you can see that we have made some big signings and I think it's the best place for me at the minute.

It's a richly deserved deal. There's been a few small incidents since he came to the club, but by in large he's been absolutely magnificent for us in the middle, and even more so since Martin O'Neill came to the club and his game seemed to be upped even more.

Even this weekend, it was evident just how much we need him around as his presence was felt all over the pitch, and reinforced just how much he was missed after a silly sending off in the Capital One Cup.

Cattermole was set to be come a free agent at the end of the season had nothing been agreed.

Overall though, it's good to see that he's delighted to stay at the club and we're equally pleased he's here. Oh and since it's pretty topical at the moment... FOUR MORE YEARS!... FOUR MORE YEARS!... etc.
