I write this tinged with sadness. It appears as though Danny Welbeck won't be back on Wearside next season.
Danny has been fantastic for us, and whilst Niall Quinn & Steve Bruce admitted the other day that it was always an outside chance and up to Manchester United whether he comes back or not, it looks now as though he won't.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson spoke of his young loan stars to United's official website yesterday, and said "They will come back into the first-team squad and they will get plenty of games next season."
Sir Alex has been as impressed as us with Danny adding "Welbeck has been fantastic, it's just unfortunate that he picked up a bad injury. But they will all be ready for next year."
Now I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that looks like Welbeck ain't coming back to SAFC next season, depite the man himself being unsure as to what he's doing with himself next year as he said to reporters earlier in the week "I've not really thought too much about what I'm going to do, but I've really enjoyed my time at Sunderland."
Meanwhile, despite my earlier plea's to Danny, he appears to have chosen an international future with England over the homeland of his parents - Ghana.
Welbeck, who opened the scoring on Thursday against Denmark's U21 side told reporters after the game of his pride in playing for England, and revealed just how close he was to linking up with Ghana. Which isn't particularly close as the striker said "I spoke briefly to a guy from the Ghana FA when he came to a Sunderland game to watch John Mensah, Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari but that’s all it is. The other lads have been going on about it but I’m very proud to wear the England shirt."
There's complete rumour that Welbeck could be a makeweight in a deal to bring Everton's Jack Rodwell to Old Trafford, however that appears to be just that - rumour, and little else upon reading the article.
I think now then we can start to look elsewhere for a striker, whilst constantly praying Sir Alex changes his mind at least lets him come back for one more season. Come on Sir Alex, please!
