WICKHAM A WANDERER?

At this stage of the transfer window Sunderland fans have a lot to worry about. The distinct lack transfer targets putting their autograph on the dotted line is a cause for concern however, there is another signature we need to gain from within our ranks.

I for one was surprised to see Steven Fletcher hit the training ground with the vigour he has during pre-season. Given his demeanour last season a lot of people, including myself would have found it hard to believe he had a future at the club. Fletcher's new attitude could be detrimental to "the Great Escape" hero that is Connor Wickham. If the Scottish international discovers the form of his first season in red and white stripes then it will be very difficult to oust him from the focal striker berth that Poyet employs in his system. Now, I am not for a second implying that Wickham will not be signing a new contract but it does give him food for thought when it comes to negotiations. The key areas he will be considering with his agent are wages and game time. Wickham's attitude has been called into question a few times in the past but one thing nobody can disagree with is the fact he is at his happiest when on the pitch. Wages will be a formality I am sure but the young attacker will be seeking assurances over how many appearances he will make for the club in the coming season.

To put a few minds at rest we can answer that question simypl by looking at the current state of the squad. When we eventually sign Borini (yes I said when) we will have four senior strikers but we will be pretty limited in how we can use them due to Poyet's system. Also we appear to be taking the cup competitions seriously which will require the rotation of squad players to avoid fatigue and injury.

That being said it isn't cut and dry that Fletcher will start the campaign as the main striker, Poyet may very well stick with his saviour and challenge the Scot to earn his place back. Either way I fully expect the England U21 forward to put pen to paper but whether it will be merited will land firmly at his door. I'm sure I speak for the majority when i say we could do without another Bardsley on our hands who only performs come contract renewal time.
