Something for the Anxiety

Supporting Sunderland has never been very easy. It's even harder when we have just endured an abysmal season, in which we anticipated a return to the Championship, to play against footballing giants such as Huddersfield and Brentford and, once again, visit the magnificent Riverside stadium. However, when it seemed all hope was lost, the impossible happened. Gus Poyet managed to take the reins from a clueless, psychotic Italian, implement a system of attractive yet effective football and somehow pull off the greatest of escapes. As expected, we all want to see a big improvement for next season and the general consensus is that we shall perform better next season if Poyet can bring in signings and have a full pre-season to further implement his style of play. However, it seems that some fans are beginning to panic without considering the full picture.

The major worry is transfers. We obviously needed to improve the squad in order to cope next season and have a more enjoyable campaign. At this present moment in time, we have signed a goalkeeper who was a free agent after leaving the league champions, a right back (to replace Bardsley), a central midfielder (to replace Colback) and a left back. Yes, an actual, living and breathing left back. We also secured the services of Larsson, who seems to play his best football for Poyet. Now, we obviously need at least four more players. This is where the panicking begins. The Premier League season is only 16 days away, yet our squad is incomplete.

The main fear is that Poyet and Congerton either won't bring them in time for the new season or will fail to sign anyone. The thing is... That won't happen. We evidently need a centre back, another full back, a forward and a winger. We have been linked with Alonso, Vergini, Cavanda, Borini and Atsu. All promising links and if they signed, we would all be feeling a lot better. However, we haven't, but that doesn't mean we should start to panic.

The idea that "if we won't get them soon, we are in trouble" is being unnecessarily worried about. We needn't worry if we don't sign them right away. Three of the five already know how Poyet plays, would fit right in to the team and could adapt very quickly. Furthermore, if we don't get those players, Gus will find suitable replacements who might turn out to be better than the ones we wanted. There are teams in worse positions who have signed less or worse players than us who are in a dire position in general like West Brom. No, really, they are f**ked. We shouldn't worry as we have a very competent manager who has the potential to take us far. He is just being cautious and we just need to give him some time.

It's understandably alarming, but we will just have to be patient. Remember last year? When we signed everyone at once and we were terrible? I'd rather a "slow and steady" policy than a "blink and you'll miss it" one.
