I am only a mere 19 years old so my knowledge of Sunderland AFC doesn't go back as long as some other supporters, however I am still just as passionate and like to think I know a lot about our history.
However, the point I'm getting on to is that the best football I've ever seen from Sunderland in the premier league is without doubt under the mighty Peter Reid. His tactics were brilliantly crafted around his team which included the likes of: Quinn, Phillips, Gray, Bridges, Sorensen, Rae and more. He was extremely close to getting Sunderland European football at the Stadium of Light in the 2000/01 season and no one has ever even got close to repeating that sort of football.
Until... Gus Poyet!
If we win the game on Sunday and West Ham lose to city we will finish 12th. 12th!! When people look at the season as a whole and say that Sunderland beat United, Chelsea, City, Everton and 2 wins against Scum United. Also getting to the final of the Capital one cup and beating United and Chelsea (again) on the way whilst also getting to the quarter final of the F.A Cup. It looks like a phenomenal season!
In reality of course it has been hard work being a Sunderland fan and I personally have gone through stages of 'We're so awful, we're gonna be playing Doncaster and Huddersfield.' to 'Nah we'll survive'. Thankfully it was the latter.
Also every season I predict Sunderland will get Europe, and this may happen again I'm sure, but I honestly think the football we have been playing under Gus Poyet in recent weeks has been brilliant. O'Shea passes the ball, Cattermole isn't getting sent off, Brown isn't giving away penalties and we're scoring goals!
Could this be better than Reid's team? Only the future can tell (But I'm optimistic)
