I'd have to say that Poyet selected a B(ish) team. The A components put in a B- performance.
At least the result puts the focus for the rest of the season exactly where it needs to be - the Premiership.
Did the players not want to go to Wembley again? The fans certainly did. So what are the team playing at?
Mentally, I suspect some of the team are thinking it doesn't matter if we lose 7 of the remaining games. This mentality means Sunderland will be Championship fodder next season. Therefore it has to be eradicated soon. Losing 7 would be fine if Sunderland won the other 5. But it never quite works out like that... Sunderland need to start winning matches pretty bloody soon. The rescheduled match against Man City will be an all out war again - and in Manchester, looks almost unwinnable. Sunderland need to win it to show intent (to stay up) and City need to win it (to win the Premiership). Not good. Other postponed matches are against other good teams. Sunderland's position in the Premiership looks fine if you believe they can win the rescheduled games, but looks worrying if you think they'll get stuffed...
So it's pretty bleedin' obvious, the excellent Sunderland have to show up for almost every remaining match. Sure, even the excellent Sunderland is going to lose a match or three, but anything less is very likely to lose many more.
That's something Sunderland can no longer afford to do.
Wake up, raise your game!. Play like every match is your last in the Premiership - it's not far away from being God's own truth.
