It may be a bit too soon to write this, i'm sure this afternoons FA Cup quarter final defeat is still raw with most Sunderland fans, myself included. After last weekends heroics I, along with all of Wearside, couldn't wait to get back to Wembley again. The cup's have been a huge lift this season, so much so I don't think i'm alone in thinking I would take another cup final over staying up.
Obviously the manager and the club think differently though. It's understandable really. For fans it's all about glory but for the club it's about keeping the club on a secure financial footing to be able to compete in the future and for Poyet it's about not having the stain of relegation on his CV.If Poyet keeps us up, and i'm not 100% he will, then he has had a successful season given the state the club were in when he took over. Let's face it, that's the most any of us could have possibly have wished for.
Despite Poyet's disappointing team selection this afternoon I believe we have an excellent manager/head coach who could take the club forward whatever the outcome of this season. If we go down, then I think he is the man to get us straight back up. If he does keep us up and is allowed to build his own squad for next season then day's out at Wembley might not be as irregular as they have been for Sunderland. Whether it's needed or not there will be yet another major overhaul in the playing staff this coming summer, the loan signings we have and player's coming to the end of their contract virtually guarantees that. The way Poyet has got this squad, which let's face it is bang average, playing football gives me great hope that he can do something special given the chance to build his own squad.
I guess what i'm trying to say is that if we do stay up then todays team selection may have been worth it. I don't like it and I don't agree with it but if better day's are to come through staying up then hopefully we can forget today. I really thought we would go for it today and still wish we had. I honestly thought the likes of Borini, Johnson, Ki and Alonso would all start but let's hope the fact that they didn't will somehow help us push on in the league.
