Poyet Prioritizes Perfectly

Another good result. Another great cup run. Distinct possibility of two Sunderland/Man City Wembley dates on current form.

Poyet is prioritizing survival. There's no doubt. Inasmuch as there is any choice, he's fielded a second team against a reasonably tasty Southampton side. To be fair, it looks like Pochetino might be prioritizing Premiership survival even more so he fielded a second team too. It's pleasing then that Sunderland appear to have a bit more strength in depth than Southampton.

At least Sunderland 2 didn't get a draw which is excellent. A win without stressing the core team selecion is truly superb. The first team just has to apply that same desire to winning a few league matches - and really - it is just a few to guarantee survival.

I still think the bar should be set higher than survival. Solid (tight) mid table between 8th and 12th is an achievable, if difficult, target. There's no point setting easy targets. They can be achieved without effort which then engenders complacency.

And setting a high bar should ensure further cup success. And believe me, City's bar is set very high.
