Roker Riches: What To Expect From Bally's Big Day

Richard Sellers

The first league game of the post Paolo Di Canio era takes place on Sunday, so our betting team cast their eyes over the Liverpool and judge where the big money can be found.

Pundit Last Week's Profit/Loss Current Balance
Stephen Goldsmith £23.05 £88.30
Simon Walsh -£7.00 £50.00
Luke Bowley £13.00 £32.90
Dave Boyle -£0.23 £7.72
Nick Holden N/A £6.00
Karl Jones N/A £0

Craig Clark

-£7.00

-£9.00

Stephen Goldsmith is the run-away leader at the top of the table after last week's results, putting some gap between himself and second place Simon Walsh. He made an excellent £23 profit by successfully picking a Swansea/Aston Villa away double.

Elsewhere it was pretty slim picking, with myself the only one to make a profit after predicting their to be over 2.5 goals in our visit to The Hawthornes, and for Fiorentina to beat Atlanta. Anyway, onto this week's picks:

Dave Boyle

With Liverpool heading to the Stadium of Light on Sunday to pose Sunderland their first Premier League test post Paolo Di Canio's dictatorship, Kevin Ball looks to have a tough test on his hands. This will also, likely, be Luis Suarez's first outing in the Premier League this term following his suspension, although the controversial forward looked a little off the pace in the midweek Capital One Cup defeat at Old Trafford. It is however his strike partner, Daniel Sturridge, that has c aught my eye and I fancy him to open the scoring at 9/2.

Away from the Stadium of Light I am going to look to Serie A, where Lazio travel to Sassuolo and should have little trouble coming away with all three points.

  • Sunderland vs Liverpool: Daniel Sturridge to score first - 9/2 - £2 stake
  • Lazio to beat Sassuolo - 13/11 - £5 stake

Luke Bowley

Just as one temperamental figure with potentially dubious beliefs on race departs the Stadium of Light in a wave of media frenzy, another one arrives. It's inevitable that Luis Suarez will score in his first Premier League game back after he actually bit someone, despite being over the age of 20 months, and so it would be wise to bet accordingly.

Elsewhere I'm going for Inter to beat Cagliari because they won 7-0 last week, which suggests they're quite good.

  • Luis Suarez anytime goalscorer - 11/8 - £5 stake
  • Inter to beat Cagliari - 11/10 - £4 stake

Simon Walsh

This week against Liverpool I really fancy Bally to set us up for a stunningly boring draw which might not entertain, but will certainly be enough to give the players a lift. No Goalscorer to... well... not score first will be my selection at 10/1. It's not a really confident one though, although I'm covered in the event of an own goal.

Elsewhere, I haven't made Luke work for his shiny tuppence this season (not a euph), so here's an Acca on some teams I've plucked from nowhere, and selected purely on odds.

  • No Goalscorer - 10/1 - £2 Stake
  • Chaves, Bossu Dour Borinage, Wisla Krakow, Tigre, Universidad Catolica all to win - 51/1 - £2 Stake

Nick Holden

Against Liverpool at the weekend I'm expecting a slightly revitalised Sunderland side under Kevin Ball to set up to try and get at least something out of the game, but ultimately I think the quality of Liverpool may just be too much for the lads. So I'm going for a narrow Liverpool victory; Scousers to win with under 2.5 goals.

Elsewhere, QPR host Middlesbrough in the Championship this weekend. So far this season, 'Arry's 'Oops have been grinding out low scoring wins for much of the season. With the home side on 7-1 to win 1-0, I'm backing them to continue the trend.

  • Liverpool to win and under 2.5 goals to be scored in match - 11/4 - £2.50
  • QPR to beat Middlesbrough 1-0 - 7/1 - £2.50
