Keiren Westwood - 6
As comfortable a clean sheet as the Sunderland 'keeper could have wished for which should do wonders for his confidence following the weekend. Some nice support from the South Stand as well. Other than that a quiet evening for the man between the sticks who had very little to do but pluck a few crosses out of the air and looked to have Peterborough's best shot on target covered from a tight angle.
Craig Gardner - 6
A return to full back for Craig who went about his business with no great fuss or fanfare, did nothing wrong or do anything too flash, a run of the mill performance.
John O'Shea - 6
Another steady away player for the Black Cats last night, had a quiet game of which I am sure he will be relieved.
Carlos Cuellar - 6
A return to action for King Carlos last night and a steady if unspectacular performance to boot, no complaints.
Jack Colback - 6
A bit of a theme developing here, but Peterborough really didn't offer a great deal to trouble Sunderland over the course of the ninety minutes despite their billing and Colback put in a decent showing. Was not shy on getting down the wing to support Larsson and made a number of overlapping runs to assist in attack.
Sebastian Larsson - 6
First thing of note was Larsson's set piece delivery, especially from corners, was much, much improved last night as the Swede swung in a number of dangerous balls into the area. The damp conditions did nothing for his hair however, so I'm knocking a mark off for that...
Ki Seung-Yung - 7
I really like the look of Ki, I really do. He always seems to conjure up space for himself on the ball and have his head up. Picked out some good balls tonight and looks to be settling in nicely.
Lee Cattermole - 8
Head and shoulders the best player on the field last night. A really triumphant return to the first team from Cattermole who looked calm and composed on the ball, spraying the ball around the field with ease. This really is a staggering turnaround in fortunes for the former skipper who looked to have become a forgotten man on Di Canio's scrap heap over the summer. Even managed to swing a sublime ball in to set up the opening goal. Welcome back Lee.
Adam Johnson - 6
Showed a few flashes of what he is capable of but overall I thought it was a quiet night for Johnson, put in a nice delivery for the second goal.
Emmanuele Giaccherini - 7
A lively game from the Italian International which really should have delivered two goals as apart from the one. Playing off Altidore, Giaccherini was a constant thorn in Peterborough's side with his constant movement, making him tough to deal with. Took his goal well and will hopefully help build his confidence having been hauled off at the weekend.
Jozy Altidore - 7
Lead the line really well for my money and grafted his balls off. Can think himself unlucky not to come away with a goal to his name as well which would have capped off a hard night's work for the American, especially as one effort from outside the area cannoned off the upright. More of the same please Jozy, the goals will come
Valentin Roberge - 6
The substitute was never really put under any defensive pressure but managed to bag himself a goal, having steered a header home from a ball from the right hand side - a decent header too, which helped put the game to bed.
Fabio Borini - 5
Was never really able to get involved in the game following his introduction
Connor Wickham - 5
Much like Borini, didn't really have much time to have any real impact on the game, although it was nice to see him involved following his exclusion at the weekend - I refuse to give up on the lad.
Man Of The Match: Lee Cattermole
A real eye-catching performance from the tough-tackling midfielder who took hold of this game by the scruff of the neck and really dictated the play from the middle of the park and a times found himself in more advanced areas of the field than Ki, perfectly showcased with his superb delivery from the middle of the pitch for the opening goal. Cattermole was an incredible presence in the middle of the field and hopefully could be exactly what we have been missing. I bet no-one saw that coming!
