O'Neill: Wickham Allowed To Leave On Loan

Kiyoshi Ota

In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Martin O'Neill has declared that Connor Wickham can leave on loan if he wishes to get game time.

Connor Wickham will be allowed to go on loan as the window opens for Football League clubs to make additional moves today.

It's a somewhat surprising turn of events given the depth of our striking position, but Martin O'Neill has revealed to the Sunderland Echo that there have been enquiries and he's open to the idea;

A couple of clubs have enquired about him and I've spoken to his agent as well.

It's one where it's an outfield player in a position where we've got a couple of options at this moment.

Now that Connor has got a bit of momentum going, having played in the first team, we want to ensure that progress continues.

And he's obviously anxious to play as many games as possible, so it's something I've looked at.

I'm sure this opinion isn't one that I'm alone on, but I wouldn't be comfortable with this at all unless there's an immediate recall clause in case of injury here. And even then only a short-term loan would appease.

Wickham needs games, but now he's the third in line for a position where we're likely to field too, sending him on loan would make very little sense to me. He's still involved here at the Stadium Of Light, even if it isn't as much as he'd like. Losing Ji Dong-Won and Fraizer Campbell trimmed the fat from the squad a little but also left us light.

Overall I think it has to be said that Wickham must stay and continue to develop and fight here otherwise we could leave ourselves short in case of injury, and also not give ourselves many options from the bench.
