Reports: One Keeper In, One Keeper Out This Summer

Richard Heathcote

Sunderland look set to see one goalkeeper leave this summer, with a hotly tipped youngster coming in to replace them.

On the eve of Ireland's friendly with Poland at the Aviva Stadium, Eire boss Giovanni Trapattoni has once again suggested to Keiren Westwood that he move on from being back-up at Sunderland.

It was first suggester to the stopper after Euro 2012 when it was largely expected that Shay Given would retire. The former Sunderland loanee has now done that, but Westwood hasn't been given the nod for this midweek encounter with the Poles, instead opting to give Millwall's David Forde a rare cap.

Westwood was largely expected to be the natural successor to Given, and was handed the number one shirt int he early part of the season but lack of game time has seen his spot go to Forde, with Stephen Henderson in back up.

Speaking with the press prior to the game he said of Westwood;

I hope Westwood can play in the future, but now the manager chooses Mignolet.

I told him you can change club and you can play. But with Forde and (Stephen) Henderson we are okay. It's important we give Forde this opportunity.

It was never going to be a surprise if Westwood left Sunderland this summer in search of a starting role, but it's now very likely that he'll want to move on given this is the second warning for him about not playing regularly.

Westwood is a perfectly fine goalkeeper and will likely find himself in the lower reaches of the Premier League or top of the Championship if or when he departs.

Sunderland are stocked with talented young goalkeepers at the club with Jordan Pickford an established England youth international and third choice here. Johnny Maddison has recently gone on loan to Crawley Town and it looks like another is set to join up in the form of Polish 16-year old Maksymilian Stryjek.

The club are currently in negotiation with his club Polonia Warsaw and it's expected the six-foot-two-inch goalie will join up, and although starting in the youth set-up he could be fast-tracked up the system due to his stature and build.

It's also likely that despite the pair's obvious talent O'Neill will bring in an experienced head to sit on the bench, so we could be set for quite some movement this summer on the goalkeeping front.
