It was a link that burst onto the scene in a pre-January blaze of publicity, but it now appears that Tim Cahill is not on his way to Sunderland after all.
A loan move for the New York Red Bull midfielder had been mooted that would have seen Cahill plying his trade on Wearside during the MLS off-season. According to a report in the New York Post, however, such a move is now 'unlikely'.
After the initial flurry of reports, it would be fair to say that this story has slowly died down over the last week until it barely registered at all with the focus very much turning to the seemingly ever-developing Alfred N'Diaye front.
What perhaps adds a little extra credence to this report is the spate of reports in the British media today strongly linking Martin O'Neill with a move for Swansea City centre forward Danny Graham.
Whilst primarily a midfielder, Cahill has also proven to be a nuisance up front too, and undoubtedly could have provided cover in forward areas. Losing out on that may well have forced O'Neill to seek striking reinforcements elsewhere.
There is a large degree of speculation in that, admittedly, but we'll be sure to follow both stories as they develop.
