Liverpool Vs Sunderland: Player Ratings

Mike Hewitt

After each and every Sunderland game we review and rate the performances of everyone who pulled on a Sunderland shirt. Check out what we thought here.

Simon Mignolet - 8

Hopefully he remains happy at the club because he's playing - because he can't be very happy at all about the defending in front of him. Awful all night and left him with no chance for any of Liverpool's goals. It was really Mignolet we have to thank for stopping this being a cricket score.

Craig Gardner - 5

Once again he slips as a right-back. Is he perhaps trying to play himself out of the position wit a series of bad perfromances? We could have chalked this one up to the level of his opposite number had Raheem Sterling been on that side, but instead he was faced with Stewart Downing and didn't really do a very good job of it.

Matt Kilgallon - 5

Rubbish. Again. Out jumped by Raheem Sterling. I've eaten burgers stacked taller than Raheem Sterling for God's sake. Overall though he was pants. The hapless fool act is wearing thin.

Carlos Cuellar - 5

Equally as poor as Kilgallon, and looked lost without John O'Shea to hold his hand. Made quite a few errors for the second week running and if we had any options he might be worth leaving out for the Bolton game. Of course, we can't do that though really.

Danny Rose - 6

Pretty much about as rubbish as everyone else but get's an extra point for being Danny Rose. Only joking, he simply was the least pathetic of our defenders. Made a decent block in the second half, which is one more good thing than anyone else.

Adam Johnson - 7

Well, he tried a fair bit, and his crossing wasn't as hit and miss as it usually is. In fact it was for the main pretty good, just a shame nobody else was really on his level.

Seb Larsson - 5

Poor game in central midfield. Looked lost and generally off the pace, so it was little surprise to see him. A plus point was his set pieces though which were generally of a high standard. Everything else was a little poor though.

Jack Colback - 6

Got stuck in plenty but other than that offered very little. Failed to get a grip in the midfield battle, which was always going to be a key to victory.

James McClean - 6

Effort certainly can't be faulted as he tried his best to help defensively. However, his finishing can be very much faulted as he wasted to glorious chances to get us back in the game at crucial moments. Hopefully he won't let it get to him too much.

Stephane Sessegnon - 5

We saw the worst of Sessegnon tonight. Passes were constantly astray and rarely looked to threaten the Liverpool goal. Sadly this is part of the package with Sessegnon, and although we know he does this from time to time, it's still infuriating.

Steven Fletcher - 6

Tried his best to forage a lone path up front but was denied service. By which we mean whenever there was chances none of them seemed to fall his way. One in the first half following Kilgallon's miss however you'd have expected him to do better with. Skrtel seemed to have his number once he'd stopped fouling him.

Fraizer Campbell - 5

Came on at half time apparently but didn't see much of him involved in the action. Possibly saving himself for that big money move to Hull City, we jest.

David Vaughan - 5

Came on. That happened.

James McFadden - 5

Full credit to Steven Fletcher's Dad for still trying to play football at the grand old age of 105. No hang on, that's James McFadden, still alive and still rubbish.

Man Of The Match: Simon Mignolet

With absolutely nothing really to write home about tonight after we were comprehensively beaten there was still only one man who could take the plaudits. Simon Mignolet was left woefully exposed by his so called 'defence' and actually produced a few stops which stopped things becoming (even more) embarrassing. James McClean in with a decent shout if you're looking for other contenders.
