Sunderland Vs Wigan Athletic: Player Ratings

We rate and review every Sunderland players performance from the 1-0 win against Wigan Athletic at the Stadium Of Light today.

Simon Mignolet - 8

Considering we live in an an era when people seemingly can't stop talking about the amount of quality Belgian players there are popping up all over the place, Mignolet never seems to get a mention anywhere. But without him here and in particularlar one stunning early save, this one could have easily gone very wrong.

Craig Gardner - 7

Our Roker Report Player Of The Month wasn't at his best but still put in a very solid performance at full back - again.

Danny Rose - 8

I don't think I'll be alone in holding my hands up and admitting that the on-loan Tottenham man has proven much more assured than I believed him to be when he was signed. Fine performance.

Titus Bramble - 7

Perhaps just starting to rebuild his reputation a little after a very tough year or so. He gave a very decent performance, winning the vast majority of his battles.

John O'Shea - 6

Couldn't quite match Bramble's performance but solid enough nonetheless.

Sebastian Larsson - 6

Neat and tidy without ever really influencing the game to a great extent. Was also quite lucky to stay on the pitch following the late tackle that looked identical to the one for which Jordi Gomez received his marching orders.

Jack Colback - 6

Tried to be the man who prompted and probed further forward but never really managed a tangible contribution. He did okay, but he had a real opportunity to be a big factor in this game after Wigan went down to ten men and never quite grasped it.

Adam Johnson - 6

It was great to finally see him in a Sunderland shirt on The Stadium of Light pitch in the Premier League, but he was a little off the pace. Started slowly and grew into the game to some extent, offering tantalizing glimpses of what he is capable of.

James McClean - 7

He wasn't especially graceful (when is he ever?) but he was in the mood. Recieved plenty of the ball, showed loads of attacking intent, and was always involved. This wasn't the best of James McClean, but it looks to be heading very much in the right direction.

Stephane Sessegnon - 7

Like McClean, not quite back to his very best but considerably better than recent league outings. Got the ball, made it stick, and was generally a threat. Welcome back Sess.

Steven Fletcher - 9

Wow. This was what forward play is all about. He led the line, threatened behind, showed for the ball in deeper areas, and kept hold of it when he needed to. Even without his customary goal this would have been a fine performance. The goal simply topped it all off. A bargain at £12m.

David Vaughan - 7

Brought on at a good time and went about his remit of keeping the ball and strangling the game with a quiet efficiency. Nice to have him back.

Man Of The Match: Steven Fletcher

Without question his best performance in a Sunderland shirt, and it wasn't short on competition. His classy one-touch finish oozed both quality and confidence. It's nice to have a proper striker again. You can only imagine now how many talking heads and so-called experts are now eating their words - because they've all gone very, very quiet.
